The topic of locks got me thinking about how safe we really are. When we get home, we lock up the car and before we go to bed, we make sure the doors are locked. It gives us peace of mind knowing things are safe and secure. Face it, we don’t sleep well if we think that we left something unlocked.
We take for granted how safe we really are. When I was in the 4th grade, some whacko broke into our house on Easter morning. The man had been at a party doing a lot of dope and he thought someone was chasing him and he found refuge in our house.
We went to bed that night thinking everything was alright. Had we known at three in the morning a psycho would pay us a visit we would have been prepared for him.
Jesus told us in Matthew 24:42&43: Watch therefore, for you do not know at what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. (nkjv)
The Apostle Paul had something to say about that also. In 1st Thessalonians 5:2&3a he writes: For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, ‘Peace and Safety’ sudden destruction will come upon them. (nkjv)
People today have a false security. When we lock up our things, how often do we go and check on them to make sure that they are still there. A simple lock won’t stop a thief if they really want what you’ve got. I have had my bike stolen right out of my back yard when it was locked up.
Jesus tells us that we need to be watching. When we have that peace and safety mentality, we tend to think that we have done our part and everything is secure but we really have no idea.
Our hope and security is with Jesus. I hear people tell me that they are okay when it comes to their spiritual life. They go to church, tithe and know the entire church lingo. The problem is that they don’t watch anymore. They got comfortable and content with what they have.
Jesus is likened to a thief because we don’t know the day or the hour of his return. But he told us the signs to watch for. Jesus rebuked the Religious leaders about the signs of the times. He told them that they could look into the sky and tell whether or not it was going to be overcast or if it would rain but they couldn’t tell the sign of the times.
That is the place where the church is today. We are snuggled up inside our four walls. Prophecy is no longer taught because someone along the way said that it was a diversion.
So how strong are your locks? Can you keep the thief out of your house? How about out of your life? Is your heart so locked up with sin and unbelief that you couldn’t see the thief coming if you wanted to?
Right now, according to Revelation 3:20, Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me.” (nkjv)
Jesus won’t knock forever. One day soon, you will no longer hear his voice. Why? Look at the door. He went to those who let him in because you wouldn’t unlock the door to your heart and got left behind.
Remember while they say, “Peace and Safety” sudden destruction will come upon them. What you chose to do now will affect you for all eternity.
