“I think you owe me an apology, Larry,” she had said sternly, casting a haughty look at him as he picked up his things and turned to leave.
He knew he had said some things that he really didn’t mean. He’d had a bad day at work and a rough test in one of his classes and should have just kept his thoughts to himself. “I’m really sorry, Tracy. I didn’t really mean what I said. Please forgive me.” His forlorn look should have said it all.
She looked at him, her haughty look never fading. “I’m sorry. I can’t forgive you.” With that, she turned and strode back to her office.
Larry was momentarily stunned. “Tracy, wait,” Larry pleaded as he followed her down the hall. “I’d had a rough day and took it out on you. I’m truly sorry.” It made no difference. She went into her office and shut the door.
The pastor was leaving his office as the scene unfolded and looked at Larry in confusion. “Something wrong, Larry?” He put his coat on a nearby chair and shook Larry’s hand.
Larry explained the situation to the pastor and shook his head. “I don’t know what else I can do,” he said sadly and turned to leave.
“Come into my office for a bit,” the pastor said, leading Larry into his office and shutting the door. He sat down and motioned for Larry to sit in the chair across from his desk. “It’s hard to believe she could craft such a speech.” He thought a few seconds and said, “Just between you and me, Tracy has been acting a bit ‘off’ lately. She may have just misunderstood you or taken something innocent that you said and made a mountain out of a molehill. Whatever is going on with her, she should forgive you, especially since you asked for her forgiveness. It’s hardly Christian to not forgive. After all, the Bible says in Matthew 6:15, ‘But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.’ She knows that verse. Maybe it will come to her and she’ll reconsider.”
“Well, I hope so,” Larry replied. “Otherwise, things are going to be awkward.” He rose from his seat. “I need to get home. I have some studying to do,” he said as he shook the pastor’s hand. “Not that I’ll be able to concentrate on it now.”
Margie was angry but calmed down after Larry told her what the pastor had said. “I just hope she comes around soon,” she said with a sigh, but it wasn’t to be. The next week Tracy put in her notice and moved away. No one ever knew why, and no one at the church ever heard from her again.
