On the day of my high school graduation a vocational counselor told the reason that I was in those special classes in high school was because I was a slow worker, and my mother came with me, and she did most the talking with this gentleman who took my information about my history. She said that I was below average when I was in school. Why did she say that on the day that I graduate?
I cried on the home with my mother. I felt let down. Part of me felt that I was not ready to graduate from high school, but I did anyway. I wanted to go to college the following year, but I was placed in a vocational program. My first job was working in a hospital as a janitor. I did not mind the job, and they liked my work. I received a good recommendation from the supervisor, but I still did not feel confident in myself.
My next placement was in vegan restaurant where I washed dishes, did food prep, and baking. They liked my work, but on weekends I drank alcohol when I was in my room. My parents often drank wine with their dinner, and when they watched T.V together in the rec room. I did not have boyfriend who I could spend time with anymore. I dated a guy in grade 12 who I went to school with, but after a short while, he said that he was busy. I wanted to attend an high dance with him.
One day when I turned 19, I just got my driver's license. One Sunday my father offered to let me drive the van. He yelled at me because I drove almost to the side of the road. I was not used to driving a large vehicle.
As soon as we came home, I went into my room after I ate lunch. I drank some of my parents booze to ease the thought of feeling depressed, and inadequate about myself. When my mother came home, my parents went to visit my grandparents in the nursing home. I drank most of my parents wine, and I fell asleep on the bed. I woke up with vomited food all over me, and the bedroom light was on. I cleaned myself up, and then I went back to bed.
The next day I went to school with a hang over at the center for academic up grading, and for job searching. I also went to the college where I took a typing course. I did pretty good in the course at the end. I got certificate which said 35 words per minute.
In 1989, I got a job at the deli full time. My coworker was always nagging me about doing things right, and working my faster, and so did my boss. That encouraged me to drink a lot when I was at my apartment, and I also went to bars. I was depressed, and I took some days off from work, and I also went to a community college once a week to take courses.
In 1998, I received a certificate in General Arts and Science. I took a few writing courses, English, Art, and computer courses. I was proud of myself.
Presently I don't drink or smoke. I realized that drinking is not the answer. I spoke to my minister about it, and he said that it leads to destruction. He was right.
