Before I met Jesus, I thought I was a brainiac. I was staying at the Salvation Army, and I was told I could not drink alcohol while living there. I had to see a social worker once a week to stay there. I was very angry, and I told my social worker that I was going to have to drink a beer, or I was going to hit somebody. I was hoping to get permission to drink a beer.
Instead, my social worker asked me if I had ever heard of Alcoholics Anonymous. I replied that I had heard of Alcoholics
Anonymous in 1973. I was asking about a place to get something to eat for free and I was told about a meeting in a church where I could get free coffee and doughnuts. The meeting lasted one and a half hours, and I sat by the coffee machine. All the women there came by my chair go get coffee, and I smiled at each of them and gave them a wink of my eye.
At the Salvation Army, one of the rules was that we had to come in before 10:00 PM or spend the night outside. My social worker wanted me to attend an 8:30 PM AA meeting. She gave me a pass to come home at 10:30 PM, which was good for one month.
After looking for a job all day long I would attend the evening meeting and then catch a bus to the Salvation Army.
I took notes of what I heard at the AA meetings. One note, I took said that many people could not control their drinking without GOD’s help. On July 4, 1997, during an AA picnic, I bowed my head and asked GOD to help me stop drinking for six months while I was on the homeless program. I promised GOD that if He would help me stop drinking for six months, I would never talk to Him again. Now I stop what ever I am doing and ask GOD if I have offended Him or anybody He loves. I now believe GOD loves everybody.
I planned to quit drinking for six months until I found a job rented an apartment and left the homeless program. I planned on buying a case of beer, “twenty-four beers”, a case of Jack Danials, “six liters of bourbon whiskey”, and an ounce of marijuana. During those six months, I began enjoying my life so much I decided to follow GOD’s guidance and live a sober life.
Early in my sobriety, I told GOD that if He ever didn’t know something He knew where I was, and He could always ask me. I thought I knew everything. After reading the Bible from Genesis 1:1 to Revelations 22:21, several times, I noticed in Proverbs GOD said:

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Every time I read those verses; I would ask GOD what was wrong with my understanding. Finally, I believed GOD showed me He had shown me that my understanding was incorrect over one hundred times. Then I saw that I shouldn’t trust my own understanding. I have found that all I need to know is written in the Bible.
I now know that I do not know everything. But now I know that I know the GOD that does know everything. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
