Emmanuel, God with Us,
O Lord who calls my name,
I hear your voice on the wind this night,
when daybreak seems so far away
and the shadows seem so heavy and close.
O Lord, Breaker of Bonds,
when the tempter comes to whisper
how little I am worth, how flawed my life is,
How your sweet voice comes to remind me
how it was you who chose to walk the hard road
from Bethlehem to Golgotha to tell me that he cares,
you who come to me as the Bridegroom
dressed in thorns and welts and bruises,
bearing the cross that set me free.
O Lord, Breaker of Bonds,
you who are the Bread of life,
who feeds me with your always living self,
how much you have given to show me that in reality,
my strong right hand is not so strong,
but yours has broken apart the bonds of death,
that my clever mind, quick and facile, cannot save me the blows of sin,
but that your grace is sufficient for all my needs,
that my friends, well meaning or not, all stumble, and in the end will fail,
but yours are the hands that will pick me up and break my fall,
that the castles that my words create turn to dust, and blow away,
but you are the ever living Word, there before the creation began
To show me the truth that will not fail.
O Lord, Breaker of Bonds,
teach me to trust in your love and mercy,
and give me, always, a grateful heart,
for showing me the truth that sets me free.
Amen.
