“Give me a break. I’ve heard that line a thousand times, so don’t even try it, boy.” His teacher’s threat was making Erik shake. What had he done to deserve this? He truly did need a break from his life. He was failing classes and barely making D’s on his papers. Between raising his kid sister and keeping his job, he needed help. “But…sir…I really need this.” His chin came up defensively as he held onto that one happy thought of his deceased mother, and braced himself for the yelling he knew would come. Hours later, Erik emerged from the principal’s office. He needed to get home and change for work. And fit in time to study for his test tomorrow. That is if dad isn’t drunk, thought Erik. Erik’s mom had died when he was just 10 which that left Erik to take care of his baby sister, Erica. She was now 12, and needed a mother, not her 17 year old brother telling her how to grow up. He had enough on his plate as it was. As Erik trudged home, he thought of the long night as it stretched before him. His day was just beginning. Erica’s on the other hand, thought Erik. Where was that girl? He hoped she was home this afternoon and staying out of their father’s hair.
