I loved my parents, however they were taken from me far too soon. I was only six when they had their accident. Having no other siblings, I became orphaned. Thankfully my Aunt Abihail and Uncle Mordecai adopted me as their own. They also loved God and continued to instruct me in the things of Jehovah. They taught me the importance of my Jewish heritage.
At age sixteen our beloved queen was removed from her throne. An edict soon spread through Susa that the king was looking for a new queen.
“Hmmm,” I thought. “I wonder if I might be considered for this position. Let me talk with my uncle.”
We talked for hours. My uncle assured me I was a beautiful young woman and would certainly do the king justice if he chose me as his queen. With the decision made, my uncle took me to Susa, presenting me to Hegai, the man in charge of finding a new queen. He took one look at me and said to Mordecai, “Yes, yes. She is a lovely young woman. Perfect. She will make a delightful queen for our king. Come, let us prepare.”
I followed.
He took me, along with six other beautiful girls, to beauty school. We spent six months learning how to use oil of myrrh and six months experimenting with spices and ointments - all to help make ourselves beautiful when presented to the king.
I thought, “how will these treatments make these girls any more beautiful. They are exquisite in their looks. I certainly can’t compete with such gorgeous women, can I?”
I was aware that I was the only one who truly loved God. I trusted Him to direct my future. He was to be glorified, not me.
When the year was up all seven of us were presented to the king. If we delighted the king, he would summon us back, by name, where we met with him personally. I was so nervous I felt sick to my stomach, but I also knew that God was here with me, therefore, I could trust him.
My turn came. I stood before the King, having no idea what he was thinking. Would I meet his expectations? Will he find favor in me? Would he summon me again?
I smiled as I stood before him, answering his questions, looking beautiful and trying to relax. When our visit was over I curtsied, then took my leave whispering, “God, may your will be done.”
Imagine my surprise when Hegai told me the king was summoning me. On shaky legs I walked into the palace. He had a crown in his hand and as I approached he said, “Esther, I love you above all the other women. I wish to make you my queen today.”
There, in the court of the king, stood a beautiful queen - Me! My childhood dreams did come true.
What I didn’t know was that “Every day Mordecai walked in front of the court of the harem to learn how I was doing and what was happening with me.” (Esther 2:11). He was praying that his “adopted daughter” would find favor with the king.
I am so grateful to an Uncle who instilled in me the way of God. I had no idea how God would use me and my words to save an entire nation.
An entire nation!
Through a series of injustices toward my uncle, a man by the name of Haman tried his best to annihilate all Jewish people. Neither Haman nor the king knew I was a Jew. If all Jews were killed, that would include me.
However, God in his mercy, found a way for my people to be spared, and for Haman to face his death. God appointed me queen to save my people. I remember Mordecai’s words to me, “Esther, perhaps you have become queen for such a time as this.”
I was privileged to be part of the king’s court. The king chose me, but God used me to save an entire nation from annihilation.
God can do anything through a faithful, obedient heart.
