“I never have enough time,” lamented my husband as he ran out the Church door, answering a call for help that came in just before the service started.
For 23 years, my husband has numbered day after day after day in the shortness of his life and the length of the duties that come with loving his neighbor. As a reward, The Holy Spirit teaches him.
By the time he slides back into the pulpit again – my husband has already waited for and picked up six people from a derelict apartment, answered a few more phone calls for help, and delivered some grocery cards.
The pressure on him is so unrelenting that all he can do by the time he gets back into the pulpit again is to open his mouth. Then the Holy Spirit fills it.
And what comes out is out his mouth is out of this world.
He hears the Father say, “The rainbow is the only thing that originates from the throne room of God and then is seen on earth. No human hand can touch it or control it, but all can admire it.”
And again, “Jesus the sinless man came down from Heaven and was born on the earth to be laid in a manger. A manger - the place of animals – the only creature on this earth who is also sinless.”
When children enter kindergarten, the teacher tests them to see if they can associate the correct number with each object that is set in front of them. She sees if they can count. It denotes a fundamental step forward in childhood education when they can.
What about our fundamental step forward in Christian wisdom? Could that be tied to counting every blessing?
We desperately need the wisdom that the Holy Spirit can teach us, and if counting our blessings is the prerequisite for that, then count me in.
