White powder- puff clouds, chasing one another in the cool morning breeze across a bright blue sky create a delightful picture. It is a sight to drive away stressful thoughts and cheer a troubled heart. But today my brain refuses to register what my eyes see. Dark clouds of doubt and fear of the unknown, block my vision. I am on my way to the USA Consulate regarding my immigration to that country. My daughter had sponsored me and if I pass the interview I would get the visa.
Since the day I received the sponsorship, I had prayed for God's guidance. I could not decide if I should leave my comfort zone - my job, my home, my Church - and go to a far away place, where I knew only my daughter and her family. For some reason I kept remembering God's call to Abraham, to leave his comfort zone and go to on a journey to a unknown land. But Abraham's calling was different, God spoke to him direct, there was no doubt there. Further, it was a command and a blessing - Go and I will bless you. I had no such assurance.
Any how I did pass the interview and was told to come back in a few hours and receive my visa. Being too stressed out to go home, I decided to walk around. Nearby I saw a steeple of a cathedral and decided to go there. The church was open, and I walked in. It was empty. The silence of the sanctuary filled with the awareness of holiness inspired me to kneel at the altar. My doubts and my fears found release as I poured my heart in prayer at the cross of my Savior. There were no words, only tears.
I prayed at that altar until the clock on the spire chimed out a melody, a hymn, and struck the hour. With a start I remembered the words of that hymn, ' Be still my soul, the Lord is on thy side......leave to thy God to order and provide...'. Was This the answer to my prayer ? Was God saying, ' don't worry I am in control ?'. I felt a flow of warmth all over me as my doubts and fears melted away - like the precious ointment upon the Aaron' s head that ran down upon his beard and went down to the skirts of his garment ( Psalm 133:2, KJV). I experienced the truth of King David's words,
'Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of of his mother; my soul is even as a weaned child' (Psalm 131:2, KJV).
With a tranquil heart and a confident step I returned to the Consulate and received my visa, and proceeded to USA. That was thirty years ago. God has kept His promise to provide for me and given me opportunities to serve Him in ways I never imagined. When doubts and fears assail me me I have learned to rest safely and securely in His comforting arms, like a weaned child.
