But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared that we should walk in them. - Ephesians 2:4-10 (NKJV)

Karen Quinlan’s name was everywhere for the decade between the mid 1970s and 1980s. There didn’t seem to be enough newspaper ink or enough radio time to cover the young lady’s story who had lost all control except life itself. Karen Quinlan swallowed some alcohol wrong at a party and lapsed into a coma. Her parents battled the courts for the right to turn off her life support. After the life support was turned off Karen kept breathing on her own – for ten years. She remained a “vegetable” with no control to do anything for herself except take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide, but she was alive. Doctors couldn’t explain why or how. Karen Quinlan lived the rest of her life in a nursing home totally dependent on the help of others.

In the Garden of Eden Adam was put under the curse of sin and death. Adam did not die the moment he ate the forbidden fruit but the course of death was just as real. He breathed and walked upon this earth, but the day came when he died. As sons and daughters of Adam we are under the same curse of sin and death. We breathe and walk on this earth, but the day comes when we die. We have no control over our destiny.

But God . . . How our hearts should sing at those two words. God, the Heavenly Father calls us by name and make us sons and daughters with Christ. Our helpless out of control condition becomes life and righteousness in Christ. We are made alive, raised, set in heavenly places, shown the riches of grace and kindness, set on the path He has prepared. Don’t the words just dance at your heart’s door?

Thank God today for His wonderful gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
