The one element that remains constant throughout our lives is the Lord’s love and His watchful eye upon us. He is always in control of everything in the universe, even when it appears He is not. There is one day I recall clearly when God showed His presence in my activities at church.
I was mingling with several ladies in the small room outside the auditorium. A few minutes later nearly everyone left the room to go to choir practice. I was just going to go downstairs to check on a few things when I became aware that I was not alone. I turned to see a very troubled young woman standing nearby.
She said, “I am Harriet and I have been coming to church here for a while. I was wondering if you know of anyone who could help me. I need to talk with someone.”
I said, “Harriet, would you like to talk with me for a while?”
Harriet hesitated and then replied, “Is there anyone in charge around here?”
I saw another lady walk around the corner and said, “There’s Mrs. Hipley. Perhaps she can help. Her husband is a Deacon."
When Mrs. Hipley came back, I called her over. “Mrs. Hipley, could you speak with Harriet? She wants someone to help her out. I will come along if you like.”
Mrs. Hipley, whose first name was Alice, replied, “Yes, I will speak with you, Harriet. Come along, Tiffany. You may join us.”
It turned out Harriet was having a problem with someone else in the church. This person lacked many social graces and had said some unkind things to Harriet. Alice said, “Perhaps this other person, Candy, was having a bad day. Maybe she did not intend to be cruel.”
I told Harriet, “It is a good idea to pray for a person you are having difficulty with. The Lord may change Candy, and then again, He may change you. He could change the way you view this situation.”
Alice prayed for Harriet to look at Candy differently and for the Lord to help her to forgive. She asked the Lord to help Candy with whatever problems she was having in her own life.
Then Alice asked me to pray. I said, “Dear Lord, please help Harriet and Candy to look at one another with compassion and please help them to each seek the Lord in their troubles. Please give them Christian love and the ability to see the other’s point of view clearly, in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
It was nearly time for church to begin, so we left the classroom to go to the auditorium. Harriet thanked me for helping her sort out her feelings. She said, “Thanks so much for praying for me.” I assured her my prayers would continue.
Harriet told me a few months later that her feelings had changed toward Candy. She said, “Candy is friendlier than before. The Lord helped me to feel more charitable toward her as well. We are on better speaking terms now.”
I know the Lord was in control of that situation. He let me be part of the healing process. God knew I wanted to help others and He saw to it I was there when Harriet was ready to talk. I felt I have not been involved with people nearly as much as I was before Covid hit, and I had been praying for a chance to bring some comfort and understanding to someone who was hurting.
I thank the Lord for this opportunity. I hope to get more chances later on to make a difference.

It's good for all of us to ask the Holy Spirit to help us pay attention to His promptings!
