We were in the process of moving to a new house and changing area from where we had lived for over 30 years. Covid19 was on the horizon, and although I knew deep down this move was part of God’s plan for us, I was fretting and wanted to keep phoning round to push the move forwards. As with most house moves, there were delays and interruptions and nothing was happening to plan. I was frustrated and wanting to sort it all out, but also aware that my husband’s approach was different to mine, taking it all in his stride.
I walked on my usual path, talking to my Heavenly Father, desperate to hear a confirmation that all was well, some encouragement that this move really was His plan, and He had it covered. I recognised my impatience and irritations with my husband being so calm with it all. I would have to take control and chase up all those involved in the move to push things ahead if he wouldn’t!
As I continued to walk I hardly noticed anything around me. On my usual walks, I would be looking around, smiling at people passing, hearing the bird songs, being thankful for the wonders of Creation. But this day, I plodded on splashing through puddles, wading through the mud, oblivious to the scenery passing me by.
I was on my return by now, frustrated that I hadn’t heard any encouragement from God, nothing! I realised I had been walking with my head down all the way, but now as I looked up seeing the carpark in the distance, I noticed a few horses in the nearby field. I had seen them before on other days, but had not even acknowledged them as I walked straight by them earlier.
This time, my eyes were fixed on them, and I knew My Father was capturing my attention,
I heard Him whisper lovingly in my ear,
“Do not be like the horse or the mule”
I knew instantly this was something from His Word. I had read it many times, and I felt the power of His conviction in me.
After getting back to the car I found the scripture on my phone.
I knew My Father was telling me to calm down, to stop trying to push ahead, to let Him take the lead, as He would guide the move, He was trustworthy. I didn’t need to be like a horse or mule who don’t ‘have the understanding’ of being led by a Faithful Father.
I felt ashamed at my pushiness, my need to be in control and my lack of faith that God would see us through this transition to a new home - wasn’t it His idea in the first place?
I let His unfailing love and peace surround me again, after asking forgiveness for wanting to do it my way!
I would need to remember this lesson taught me on a rainy muddy winter day, as the weeks ahead proved testing, and many times I tried to push ahead in my own strength, only ending up feeling miserable and anxious.
Now almost a year after the move, I can look back and see His hand every step of the way. We made it into our new house 3 days after the first national lockdown due to Coronavirus, a miracle in itself, as the removal company closed the following day.
How often do we try to take control, do things our way, running ahead thinking we know best, ending up frustrated by our plans coming to nothing?
I’m sure our Heavenly Father watches over us with a twinkle in His eye, waiting patiently for us to stop rushing around, and look to Him. It’s a hard lesson to learn, to rest in His unfailing love, and trust that He has our lives all mapped out.
I often think back to those horses in the field when I am flustered, trying to push plans to work. But I am very thankful that God spoke so clearly to me that day, thankful that His Word has the power to stop us in our tracks, and that He would so lovingly show me that I need only stop, look up and put my trust back in Him.
Psalm32:8-11 (NIV)
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will council you with My loving eye on you
Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding
But must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you
The Lords unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in Him
Rejoice in the Lord and be glad you righteous
Sing, all you who are upright in heart
