Joseph got up. He answered Sabra.
‘I have a stone in my sandal.’
‘What is bothering you my friend?’ Sabra asked.
‘It is forbidden to speak about it.’
Sabra went on walking as Joseph turned to go to the House of Potiphar, his benefactor.
Potiphar’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph.
‘Come, come, lie with me.’ Zuleikah said to Joseph.
A flash back in Joseph’s mind, reminds him that God had forewarned him to be cautious of the wife of his master, was yet again taken aback by this blatant invitation.
Joseph refused, and said the following to her:
‘Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?’ Genesis 39 v 8 and 9.
The wife of Potiphar was not happy. How dare he refuse her, the wife of the captain of the guard of Pharaoh?
Day by day, she invites Joseph to lie with her.
She dressed in yet more seductive clothing, each day her skin was perfumed; still Joseph refused.
With her ego black and bruised, her perfume nearly finished, and the trading caravan with her favourite perfume is only arriving with the next full moon, Zuleikah schemed. She had to have this good-looking well-built man that everybody is talking about. He was hers, and hers alone.
If only I could get him to lie with me! Zuleikah thought.
‘Paramessu!’ Zuleikah called the chief butler (a eunuch) who was always within hearing distance.
Almost immediately he appeared.
‘At your service, your highness.’ A title she enforced on her servants.
Zuleikah spoke concise authoritative sentences.
‘Your word is my command, your highness.’
‘Dismissed.’ Zuleikah said. A self-pleasing smirk on her face, and a twinkling in her eyes she calls for her handmaiden to attend to her hair.
Paramessu left the quarters of Zuleikah to execute the plan.
Joseph is diligent, dedicated and disciplined; he performed his duties with honour.
This day, the fourteenth day of the seventh month on his way to the House of Potiphar, Joseph arrived on schedule, his stomach in a knot.
Upon entering the hall he immediately sensed something was amiss, he was about to call out to the servants when Zuleikah, appearing out of nowhere, grabbed him by his forearm.
In a few seconds he summed up what was happening; no servants were in sight; Zuleikah was freshly perfumed, and her eyes lined with kohl, her hair brushed to a tantalising shine and dressed in an almost sheer robe.
Zuleikah, feeling his muscles tensed up, grabbed him with both her hands. Joseph spun round, out of his tunic and ran.
Humiliated, she called for her servants. Her humiliation turned to anger; her ego, was trampled upon again, and this all in front of the servants of the house. Her plot did not succeed.
Yet again she conspired with Paramessu and the servants, pretended to be the victim.
When Potiphar came home that evening, she stooped low. She accused Joseph of making untoward advances towards her, holding up Joseph’s tunic. She called Paramessu and the servants as witnesses.
‘The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to mock me; so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.’ Genesis 39 v 17 and 18.
Joseph ended up in the royal jail.
Zuleikah should have taken up weaving instead!
