Clearly, Dad had forgotten her she thought. Even the nanny had displayed her present in her room much to Mary’s dismay. Why was she the only one without a gift? Yet he had asked her to tell him what she wanted before he left. What was she to do? Must she approach him? Should she ask him if he had bought her something? Even when she had served him his tea and biscuits, his facial expression revealed nothing. It was as if nothing was wrong.
Maybe this was the usual “You are a big girl. You look after your things nicely story.” Why, was she so careful with her books, pens, pencils and all that school stuff? Each time Dad corrected the boys he used her as an example.
“It’s cold. Why are you not wearing sweaters? You will get sick. Look at your sister. She is wearing a sweater.”
“Put all your books in your bags. That way you will not lose them. Have you seen your sister’s bag?”
Then Dad would go with them shopping to get new sweaters and books because the others were spoiled and hers were intact.
Mary was feeling gloomy. Her face was downcast. Clearly she was the forgotten one. That night her Dad called her to the sitting room when the boys had gone to bed. He placed a small box in her hand. In it was a mini radio. Her face lit up. It was the best present ever. She had not expected it. Clearly, Dad did see her as a big girl. He just had his own way of showing it.
Matthew 7:11 (NIV) It you, then, though evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
