Biblically, however, giants tend to be negative. Even Saul being head and shoulders above everyone else was one of the worst kings Israel had. So how do we deal with 'giant' problems in our lives?
The classic understanding of David and giant Goliath is that we need to channel our inner David to overcome the Goliaths in our lives. But this is a wrong reading of Scripture. Scripture isn't all about us. It's all about Jesus.
Remember Jesus on the road to Emmaus? He gave an enviable summary of Scripture and showed how it all pointed to Him. So a correct reading of David and Goliath is to see the Son of David, the Lord Jesus Christ, reflected in His ancestor. Jesus defeats the ultimate giant of death that we could never overcome.
'Where, o death is your victory? Where, o grave is your sting?' Jesus has defeated the Goliath of our mortality by His death and resurrection. We are powerless to defeat the giants of satan, sin, the world, death and hell. But Jesus has already overcome them, so that in Him we can prevail.
'Almighty Lord, we praise You for Your power over every giant in our lives. May we trust You and not ourselves to win eternal life for us, in Jesus' powerful name, amen'
(Scriptures paraphrased from memory)
