Bat Masterson, Gun Smoke, and yes, even Zorro, to name a few. We learned right from wrong, and usually, the good guys wore white hats, and it seemed as though the bad guys always happen to be wearing black hats.
A practice of the day was to sell, sell, sell to their youthful viewers. It became a regular pattern of television programmers to convince their young viewers like myself to this fact, " I've got to have it. " A couple of items that I had to have was the coon skinned hat of one Davey Crockett, and I also remember owning Bat Mastersons golden handled black cane. And finally, there came a time when my Dad put his foot down; he said if you've used up your allowance, that sounds like gross mismanagement of your funds, my son, and besides, it's your responsibility. He believed that I purchased packs of cowboys and or army figurines, and he was even hopeful that I had hidden my monies away for a rainy day. The family knew that I would ask him because he was a soft touch or an easy mark for me; they also believed that I had a silver tongue. My Mom and Teachers all said that I must have kissed the Blarney Stone sometime in my short life. They all said this, with a chuckle in their voice.
Now comes the time for me to divulge who or what my hero was in 1958. First, I'll give you three guesses, wrong, wrong, and wrong. It was a Submarine Sandwich; some called it a "Hero Sandwich," it has been called many things depending on your location. My favorite was ham and cheese with Mayonaisse, lettuce, and tomato on a whole Italian loaf split right down the center? You see, my brother and I would stop off at our neighborhood delicatessen each morning before caddying during the Summer for our lunch.
We each Carried two golf bags six days per week, 18 - 36 holes per day for five years. Caddying is how we could afford our daily lunches, and sad to say, this practice hurt our Mom's feelings somewhat. After all, in her eyes, we were still her baby boys. Dad, who signed and gave his special permission, allowed me to caddy at Hubbard Heights Golf Course in Stamford, Ct. at the tender age of ten. You see, my Dad and uncle knew Jackie Robinson, the baseball great; I even caddied for him on many occasions, he would always ask for me whenever he played a round of golf. Hubbard Heights was a public golf course in which I learned a great deal, even enough to afford me the ability to become a real student of the game. I won the Caddy Tournament as well as the longest driving contest in 1959. We stayed out of trouble, and we were in great physical shape.
Fast-forwarding to the year 2020, and now my all-time hero is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and has been ever since 1982. I can honestly say that Jesus Never Fails; I/we may have times in our lives when we become unsatisfied or even disappointed because of unanswered prayer or maybe even a significant life-changing and yet a heart-breaking event. Stay the course with Jesus, why because Jesus Never Fails. I can honestly say that the Son of God is the real deal, and He is available 24/7. Jesus is so much more than those actors who played our cowboy heroes in the 50s and 60s. I still enjoy a John Wayne western and many others that I can discover from the past. My hero is the same Yesterday, Today, and Forever, and his name is Jesus Christ.
