Topic: PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD (07/23/20)
The first writer to coin the phrase about a best foot going forward was Sir Thomas Overby, in 1613. He was a poet/writer, and one poem can be found on-line, “Sir Thomas Overby’s Wife.”

The saying under consideration is an idiom that instructs one to put every positive effort you can muster into the thing you undertake to do. Good instruction.

The idiom also points our attention to our feet. That’s where I wish to hang out in this writing.

Feet, obviously are foundational. They take us where we go, although other parts of our bodies are in charge of our feet. Our feet are obedient servants.

So who is the boss of our feet? We can quickly discern that it is our brain. But something deeper is in charge of that organ, it is our will, our soul, which instructs our brain to to tell the feet, or any other body extension, what to do.

Of course I am going for a spiritual point that we learn from The Bible, several points in fact, and I will focus on a real life story of this era. Ted Bundy.

Ted Bundy was just a nice normal teenager, all his neighbors said so. Ted Bundy told his story to Dr. James Dobson just before his execution for multiple rapes and multiple murders. He ask Dr. Dobson to warn America for him so that other Ted Bundys would not be developed.

You can view a full video, (55 minutes) of the interview that Ted Bundy and Dr. Dobson shared. Ted, who had a born again experience during the 10 years he was incarcerated and awaiting execution, requested Dr. Dobson to warn everyone. This is the site:

He fell into this pit as an innocent child. He did not know where the programming of his mind would direct his feet to go. He developed an addiction. The sad, sad story of all addictions.

“The eye is the window to the soul…” Matthew 6: 22, 23

Even Pastors in the Pulpit are subject to porn as a problem: 12% of Youth Pastors and 5% of Pastors say they are addicted to pornography, while 57% of Youth Pastors ans 64% of Pastors say they struggle with porn.

Of course it is not just a male problem. Our culture, as it descends further into the cult worship of sex includes anyone, everyone, who can be deceived into it.

The route is then first through the eye into the mind/soul, where it incubates and grows, because the person knows they would never act out those things, but they are interesting to think about.

The enemy knows we think that, they are patient, waiting for the time they can make us think we must experience the imagination, now developed into a raging desire, or die, and eventually we tell our feet, “Take me there.”

The process is basically the same for every addiction, even food. Admittedly, every addiction is not equal to some others in it’s weight of destructiveness.

The greater percentage of broken marriages and divorces in our Nation are a product of the same process. Infidelity has become one of those problems. Most men or women never set out to be unfaithful. They just aren’t aware that those eyes that “play” with the “idea” of someone who makes them feel good about themselves, will take their feet in that direction. They SEE, they imagine, the desire grows, and then the feet go.

How do we escape this temptation trap? David said, “My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for He will pluck my feet out of the net.” Psalm 25:15

“Keep your eyes upon Jesus,” as the hymn we never sing anymore, says to us, is right on advice.

The truth is that the Devil has no “new tricks,” just new people to work them on. That is why we and our children must be reading the Bible. In it is wisdom that makes life work to our best advantage.

Isaiah 26: 3 “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose MIND is locked on YOU.”

You packed a lot of topics into this piece! As far as feet are concerned, it seems my feet rule my body! If they hurt, I hurt all over. But I understand your point about the brain. It really is a mind game.

A lot of good commentary in your piece. I would have liked you to 'lead' me in your writing than telling me 'where' you were taking me. Good job!

You make some excellent points in this mini-sermon. I could easily picture a minister preaching this in the pulpit. The first bit is mainly a definition of the topic and doesn't necessarily pull the reader in. On the message boards under Jan's Writing Basics, (https://www.faithwriters.com/Boards/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=30167) you can find some great advice about this. Even though she doesn't do new lessons, there is some great advice there.
Instead of telling the reader what you are going to do next, just do it: (That’s where I wish to hang out in this writing.)
Put links to videos and other references in the end in an author's footnote.
You've made some great points. I think you probably could expand on just one idea instead of trying to put too much information in all at once. I remember being told that in my first submissions here too. It wasn't until I read and commented each week on almost every entry until the point really hit home with me. Reading and commenting is one of the most important things I've done to improve my writing and to help me figure out what works for me. Keep writing, you have a lot of potential.
