The original Rabbit family had short, rounded ears and a long bushy tail they waved high in the air like a banner when they ran. The many Bunnies ran about, mostly unsupervised by their elders; the youngsters were lively and quick, running and hopping and playing Hide and Seek in the tall grasses. They could also freeze in place for many minutes as if made of rock until their sensitive noses twitched to catch a scent and their concentration was broken
The one lamentable trait of the Rabbit progeny was their insatiable curiosity. It caused them to pester the humans with many questions. The humans, kindly answered them with sage admonitions and rules to live by, illustrated in anecdotal stories and proverbs. If a question addressed future events, the humans sought their answer from the Omniscient One who knew all things. Therefore, given foresight, the humans warned the Bunnies against their reckless habit of jumping uninvited into conversations and situations between others. They predicted it could cause serious consequences.
And then one day, the genetic code for all generations of the Rabbit Clan was reprogrammed. That fateful morning began like many others; several young Bunnies bolted from their log home at an exuberant full speed run up the trail. They rounded a corner and had to slide to a stop to prevent a head-on crash into the rear of the group of chattering, finger-pointing Chimps. The Pup Clan stood face to face with the Chimp family warning them with growls to come no further into their territory. The Bunnies knew the tendency of the unruly Pups to instigate trouble and so they put their heads together to plan a distraction to break the tension. Acting in unison, several Bunnies hopped up on the backs of the Pups and pulled their ears. The Pups merely shook them off and turned their attention back toward the Chimps. They grabbed hold of many of the Chimps’ tails and pulled hard. The Chimps howled and hopped about.
The Chimps then reacted by turning on the Bunnies. One Chimp grabbed a young Bunnie by her ears. The other Chimps, quick to mimic the actions of their leader, each grabbed a Bunnie by the ears. While this didn’t hurt them very much, the Bunnies became very frightened. To break away, they planted their feet and pulled with all their might. Squeals amid the sounds of stretching brought them all to a standstill; all were awestruck to see that the Bunnies’ ears had increased by many inches and their tails were all but gone! The Bunnies cried out in dismay because where their tails had been, only a little ball of fur remained. The Chimps were so surprised that they let go of the elongated ears and the little Rabbits raced home in shame.
And to this day, bunnies (now a generic term) are born with long ears, very short tails, and a desire to run and hide. These changes are to remind them to keep to their own business and heed the proverb of old passed on down through time,
“Like one who grabs a stray dog by the ears
Is someone who rushes into a quarrel, not their own.” Proverbs 26:17 NIV
