I walk through slowly with my tape measure, my notebook and my pen in hand. I stop often to take notes. Sometimes I measure, sometimes I just stand and look. What color should I paint the hall? Does the family room need new carpet? How will my furniture fit? That light fixture in the dining room has got to go.
Days later after cleaning, repairing and painting I am ready for the moving truck. It pulls out of the driveway of my new address and I begin to unpack, arrange and decorate. Between jobs I sit in my rocking chair with the sun streaming through the south window. I sip a cup of green tea from my favorite mug. As I gaze about I begin to feel a sense of belonging. I thank God for my new home.
It takes planning and work to make a house a home. To make our own space. In a similar way God works in our hearts. Though our hearts belong to him they may not be truly His. He needs to clean, polish and repair. He wants to make our hearts His space.
“ Oh God help me not to resist Your efforts. May my heart truly be Your home.”
