Mr. Morrison, their coach for the past three years, signaled the girls could go and get themselves a drink of water and take a 10-minute rest before he started the last half of their practice. “We’re looking good, but we want to look great,” the coach said with a smile.
Twelve girls ran off in different directions to either get a drink from the fountain or sit in small groups to chat and take that rest, as Mr. Morrison suggested.
Carrie needed to make a phone call, so she grabbed her phone from her duffle bag exited the gym and headed for the hallway where the reception was much better.
As she was about to dial the number she sensed someone behind her. Without warning this person grabbed her and started dragging her down the hallway. He had put his hand over her mouth to keep her from screaming. She tried to hit him, tried kicking him, but he was too strong, holding her too tightly.
This can’t be good, thought Carrie. I need to get away.
When they reached the Exit door the man pushed it open and dragged Carrie outside. It was five o'clock and by now starting to get dark. There were a few outdoor lights shining throughout the parking lot, and one dull light by the Exit door. She noticed a dark sedan parked near the entrance.
Was he going to put her in that sedan?
Did he have a gun?
Did he intend to rape her?
Where did he come from?
The school is supposed to be locked.
How did he get inside?
What was going on?
All these thoughts, and more, ran through Carrie’s mind.
“Dear God, this can’t be good. I need help,” Carrie prayed.
As they approached the car he gruffly whispered into her ear, “You are going to get into this trunk and if you scream or yell I will kill you on the spot. Do you understand?”
All Carrie could do was nod her head.
But, as Carrie did so, she remembered a Scripture verse she had learned in Sunday School last year.
Psalm 32:7 “You are my hiding place, you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”
“God, I need help - NOW. Deliver me. Protect me. I am not going to get into this car. Surround me with your songs of deliverance please,” Carried prayed.
The man used his key fob to open the trunk. The lid popped open just as the Exit door opened and Mr. Morrison came out.
Carrie? Are you out here? We need you back at practice.
What the……Who are you?
The man closed the trunk, roughly pushed Carrie aside, jumped into his car and drove away.
A stunned, shaken, teenage girl fell to the pavement and sobbed at what might have been. “He tried to take me” sobbed Carrie. “He grabbed me in the hallway and was going to take me.”
This man was up to no good. Had it not been for the perfect timing of Mr. Morrison coming to her rescue, she would be headed to who-knows-where.
Mr. Morrison ran to Carrie and held her in his arms as he tried to comfort her. I got his license plate number Carrie. We will call the police. Maybe they can find this man.
Let’s hope they arrest him before he can hurt someone else a compassionate Mr. Morrison said.
“Mr. Morrison” said Carrie, “I asked God to protect me. I asked him to surround me with songs of deliverance. God sent you. Thank you so much for coming to my rescue. I was really scared, but God is good. He does answer prayers.”
