Just an aside: For anyone who buys into the “If I have checks, doesn’t that mean I still have money?” mentality, reconciling your back statement means the bank is usually right so go back and balance your checkbook. LOL!
Anyway, I did a cursory read of the statement and noticed an unexpected charge of $3.00 cleverly called “Fee.” No description of what kind of fee, just “Fee.” That was odd because I had the checking account with no fees attached to it. Who wants to pay out money if you don’t have to?
For all my searching, I couldn’t sort out what the fee was for so I called the bank. Within a short period of time, a customer service agent came onto the line. I explained the situation and asked her, “Can you determine why I was charged the $3.00 fee?”
She checked the computer and located the reason. “That charge is because you came into the bank while we were open.”
The day of “the incident” flashed through my mind. As I got to the bank entrance, I saw the ATM to right of the door. I was withdrawing money so I did consider withdrawing it from the ATM. Nah, why not go inside and talk to an actual human being? I decided. Who knew that such an innocent decision would lead to a fee?
“Wouldn’t I have gotten arrested for coming into the bank when you weren’t open?” I asked without thinking carefully.
(Yikes, I failed the sarcasm test. Ephesians 4:29: "Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.")
[Uncomfortable interlude.]
“It means that if you come into the bank to receive service for something you could’ve done at the ATM outside, we charge a fee,” she explained.
“I see,” I replied. “Thank you. Bye.”
Back to the bank statement. I circled the $3.00 and wrote “Walking into the bank fee” in the Fee column.
