Proverbs 30:8 (NKJV)
8 Remove falsehood and lies far from me;
Give me neither poverty nor riches—
Feed me with the food allotted to me;
This has become a prayer that I ask frequently. Because, I know my sinful heart that I will never be content, especially if I have more. More riches create a sense of greed in myself that is never satisfied.
We live in a world here in America where greed is the norm rather than the exception. And greed generally transforms into covetousness. Advertisers really temp us to be greedy in a society where there is always the Credit that Banks offer-- to buy more and have more.
We did something about 12 years ago, which I thank God for the directions He gave to my wife and I. Something that we realize the effects of to this day. We cancelled our TV Cable Subscription, as our son [who was 8 years old then], announced “TV is my life!” We had to all go through a withdrawal process from our individual television programs, but the Blessings from it were really two-fold. Certainly, the content of the programs we watched, we have now discovered had really desensitized us. But also, then we previously had endless commercials coming into our home that would temp all of us with products that we now realize were nothing more that a luxury. In a tiny way, we had removed one conformity to the world. As this verse tells us:
Romans 12:2 (NKJV)
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God
Certainly, that experience has brought up other realizations in how we can allow society to conform us to the world in which we live. Greed is a very persuasive thing and previously I really thought I always had to make more money to supply my temptations to be greedy.
