I remember stories about our great great great great…... (I can’t recall exactly how many “greats”) grandparents Adam and Eve. The specifics are fuzzy, but I remember something about an apple and a swindler that got her and grandpa evicted from their home. They later had a couple of sons who had a sibling rivalry issue that led to one son killing the other. Can you imagine someone killing their brother out of sheer jealousy?
Grandma told me about great aunties Mary and Martha, two close sisters with opposite personalities. One was very serious and rigid, the other more easy-going and free-spirited. I can’t remember which sister was which though. Mary and Martha had a brother named Lazarus. Grandma said she heard rumors that Lazarus came back from the dead. That story kept my cousins and me up that night.
There was one story that confused me as a child. It was about a relative whose name grandma never mentioned, that poured expensive perfume all over some man’s feet and then used her head like a mop and rubbed it in. I was perplexed as to why she thought a man would want sweet smelling feet to begin with, and why she used the “good stuff”.
I have a few favorite tales, but one of my most favorite ones is the one about Great Uncle Moses. He was a hero! Grandma said that an evil man named Pharaoh kidnapped some of our kinfolk, treated them terribly, and wouldn’t let them leave despite many pleas for their release. Great Uncle Moses rescued them and helped them to get back home. The part about that story that we thought was especially cool was the magic tricks that Great Uncle Moses performed. When Pharaoh and some of his men went after uncle and our relatives, our uncle turned a sea into dry land, so they could quickly get across it. Then he turned it back into water so the men couldn’t get to them.
Grandma’s stories were the highlight of my visits (well that and her pies). I think back on them often and look forward to the time when I have grandchildren of my own to share them with.
