“Oh, don’t say our little truck’s not going to start!”
We had just got into our old Bedford, stuffed our packed lunches in the pocket, and now she wouldn’t fire once!
Piled high in the back were fruit trees, tools, stakes and all the other necessities for a long day’s work several miles away. Now she wouldn’t start!
Monday was a ‘Closed’ day in our small specialist nursery, the day our son and I went out to work on our customers’ properties to plant, prune, and so on.
We just could not find out what was wrong with our little four-wheeled beast. We did this, and that, and the other, and everything seemed OK. Many times we tried the starter and not a single plug fired. We’d already wasted twenty minutes!
Then it happened. A smooth engine sound - music in our ears.
‘Why, Lord?’ I asked in bewilderment.
Immediately, I got his answer: ‘You gave it a miss this morning.’
They were almost the same words I had said to my wife a short while previously.
From the early years of our family life, we had read the Bible and prayed together after breakfast every day. However, that morning, I was feeling the pressure of a full day ahead involving a lot of preparation and heavy work. Winter days were very short, so by abandoning that daily visit to God’s Word, I could add twenty minutes to our working day. I assured myself it was ‘just for once’.
Praise the Lord that he reprimanded me with our little Bedford. Never again would I ‘skip the daily trip’ of meeting with him.
It was a precious twenty-minute lesson in God’s classroom.
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” Galatians 6:7

You did a bit more telling than showing. I might suggest that you show the MC's grumpy mood with something like this:
After climbing into the old Bedford, I stowed my lunch and turned the key. Silence. I pounded my fist on the steering wheel. "Not today! I don't have time for this nonsense."
Your opening identified one of the conflicts right away, which is always good, but it was a bit repetitive.
Your story was on topic in a couple of subtle ways. The message is clear and one we all need to be reminded of from time to time. I liked the Scripture at the end; it was a great pairing to your message.
God bless
