“Stop being so nostalgic Gordon,” instructed Herbert as he slapped his buddy on his back and peered into the next room where his client, the wife, was engrossed in her Facebook posts. “Just sit back and let the computers do our work for us.”
“What are you doing?” asked Gordon as his companion pulled two long crochet hooks attached to a half completed gold colored scarf out of his bag. “This is what I mean,” pointing at the absurdity, “we have been reduced to crocheting!”
“What?” Herbert pulled out a couple lengths of the gold yarn, “It relaxes me. That’s what you need a hobby,” he exclaimed as he motioned for Gordon to try his hand at crocheting.
“Guys like us don’t crochet scarfs,” he said with disdain, “we are supposed to be ruthless and cutthroat, but now we just sit here and twiddle our thumbs. Damn computers!” Gordon rose up out of his chair in disgust and walked over towards his client who was so captivated by the pictures displayed on his computer’s monitor that he was numb to the presence of the two or his wife in the other room.
“Relax” Herbert joined his friend as they looked at the monitor, “Look, it is selling itself.” Herbert gently pulled Gordon by the arm back towards the comfortable chairs. “Just let the computer do all the work.”
“I can’t do it,” announced Gordon as he pulled away from his chum and walked back towards his client, “I am a professional and I will be damned if some machine is going to do my work for me!” Gordon began to fiddle with the computer’s plug in the wall. “Herbert we are going old school my friend.” A loud crack and a bright flash of light from the socket immediately turned the computer off along with all the other power in the house. “You are complacent and lazy. Put that yarn away and pull your old skills out of that bag of yours.”
“C’mon man really?” Herbert dropped the scarf in the chair he was sitting in and instinctively began to make his way towards his client in the other room. The deafening electrical crack had instantly broken the trance she had been in for the last hour. “I had her right where I wanted her.”
The smell of ozone filled the air as the husband and wife found each other in the dark. “I guess you have to use some of that old Herbert razzle dazzle to get her back.” Gordon smirked with satisfaction though his friend could not see him through the darkness.
“Ha, Ha!” Herbert sarcastically remarked as the light from the husband’s phone illuminated the now blackened wall socket and melted plug. He motioned for his wife to search for candles in the kitchen while he went to investigate the fuse box in the hallway closet.
“Use your demon instincts to get these two at each other’s throats.” Gordon demanded as the two began to ply their trade. Gordon held his finger against the fuse switch preventing his client from restoring power; upset he pounded his fist against the fuse box. “I got mine mad. How are you doing?”
Herbert pushed a box into his client’s darkened path causing her to stub her big toe and scream out in pain. “Hey Gordie,” Herbert called out as he moved the candles from the utility drawer to the silverware drawer, “You were right. This is much more fun.”
Herbert’s client set the lit candles on the coffee table in the living room as she and her husband both prepared to berate each other because their evening engrossed in everything other than each other had been suddenly taken from them. Just as words were about to be spoken the light from the candles flickered as if someone had walked by. Both the husband and the wife looked toward the candles; the still flickering light illuminated the bold, gold words, “THE HOLY BIBLE”.
Herbert just shook his head as the husband picked up the book and said, “So much for the old ways.”

After reading it three times it sunk in that there were two clients and they are married. Like I said, it could just be me, but it can be hard when the reader needs to reread to help the story click. Once I figured it all out. I thoroughly enjoyed it. We all need a power outage from time to time. I'll begrudgingly admit, I've been jealous of my hubby's interest in the computer over me. Great message.
Blessings~
