Previous Challenge Entry (Level 2 – Intermediate)
Topic: SOCIAL (04/07/16)
Sitting on a folding chair, I watched as couples twirled and bounced in front of me. Music blared and a rotating disco ball cast flickering light throughout the darkened dance hall. I sighed deeply and checked my watch not remembering when time dragged so endlessly.

Considering I had plenty of time to kill, I decided getting some punch would be helpful. I stood, straightened my satin bell bottoms, and was about to walk to the refreshment table, when Caroline plopped down on the adjacent seat and pulled me back down.

"Isn't this the coolest social event ever?" she shrieked.

"I think I would rather be at home in bed, or walking on hot coals," I shouted above the booming bass.

"What are you talking about? This is the social we've been waiting for all year. With three fraternities here, there are lots of dreamy guys we can choose from."

"I am not interested in a dreamy fraternity boy. I'm only here because our sorority requires it. I will be immediately exiting as soon as my hour is completed."

Caroline stood, and looked at me pointedly. "Annie, you should at least give it a try."

"I'm not sure I should even be here Caroline. Maybe God doesn't approve."

"What? God might just plop a cute boy right down in front of you. Anyway, I'm sure he wants us to have some fun, and disco dancing is fun!"

I watched Caroline, in her shimmery blue jumpsuit walk away to the beat of the music and in search of a cute boy.

"I'm quite certain God doesn't plop people," I called out to her. Suddenly becoming very thirsty I stood, determined to get to the punch bowl this time without distractions.

It was not an easy achievement as I dodged jutting elbows, break dancer's legs, and hair whipping in the air. The refreshment table was within sight when a tall blonde man whisked past holding Caroline high above him.

"Annie look, I'm flying!"

I shook my head as I safely reached the punch. Grabbing the ladle, I poured frothy liquid into a paper cup. As I took a sip of the sugary punch I turned in time to see Leonard from speech class approaching. I turned away and quickly moved toward my refuge against the wall. I shimmied and sidestepped the gyrating couples as The Bee Gee's "Stayin' Alive" blared.

Once in my uncomfortable chair, I again checked my watch wondering if the battery had died. Just twenty more minutes and I would regain my freedom. Glancing up, I noticed Leonard approaching. There must be an exit door close by. I stood and faced the door, when I felt the presence of a human next to me. I slowly turned, and there he was.

"Hello Leonard. I didn't know that you were in a fraternity." The door is so close.

"Well, yes, but these events are not my favorite. May I sit with you Annie?" His dark brown eyes looked at me pleadingly, so I relented.

"Sure, why not. I'm getting ready to leave in about twenty minutes though. My time will be up." I dropped down on my seat and chuckled as Donna Summer's, "I Will Survive" filled the room.

"It sounds as if you don't care for this social either." Leonard gazed with a smile revealing dimples I was sure I had never noticed before.

"No, I'm just putting in my time before I head home. I usually don't frequent these social events." I paused then added, "In fact I'm going to start going to a Bible study tomorrow morning."

"That's what I do every Saturday morning. Maybe we'll be going to the same one."

I stared at him. "You, a fraternity boy attend a Bible study?"

"Yes, I find studying the Bible keeps me grounded. This college life can be a distraction," he said with a smile.

Just then Caroline twirled by. "Why don't you two dance?" She shouted as she disappeared into the crowd.

We looked at each other, and then Leonard was the first to speak. "It would help pass the time."

I agreed and followed him out to the dance floor. As we began to move, I called out to Leonard with a giggle, "Do you think God plops people?"

Very good. Your only misstep is making a sorority sister planning to go to a Bible study question a fraternity brother going to one. But two people uncomfortable at parties meeting and starting to enjoy it together? I doubt if anyone else took that angle.

This is sweet. I love the plopping lines. I think God does plop and it created a great mental picture.

This story brought me back to the 60s and early 70s. I'm glad this sweet couple got together.
