As I felt myself coming to, all I could hear was the cracking sound that handcuffs make when they are being put on your wrists. Only these cuffs didn’t just bind my hands. They were wrapped around my chest, my feet, and my mind. I could not breathe. I looked around and all I saw was a sea of blue lights flashing. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed bent piece of medal that once was a car. What I had I done?
The rules of the game were simple. On Friday night and Saturday night, we would go and hang out at the club. In return, my buddies would go to church with me. I upheld my end of the bargain, but never saw them make it to church. Worse yet, the hysteria in their laughter made it very clear that they had no intentions of paying off their debt. Only this time, the debt appeared to be insurmountable. I tried to rewind and remember what happened, but nothing came to mind. I called the police officer next to me, but he raised one finger as if to say “give me a minute.” But he may as well as raised an eternity worth of fingers, because what I was about to say would stay with me for a lifetime.
It was a Saturday. The workload was heaver than normal, and we were all asked to come in a little early. Our locker room smelled like a skunk having a fight with cheap cologne. And the cologne won! The 8 of us compared notes every Saturday. What clubs were on our hit list?? Who did we know that worked there? Was it a proper attire club? Ultimately, we eliminated every club but one, and that one would be the one we would go to.
The atmosphere was thick. Never before had so many people with one thing in mind come together in an effort to have an extended evening. It was like a bunch of athletes negotiating their next contract. It was good theater with bad actors and actresses, all trying to act like they were there for something other than temporary pleasure.
The long day had taken its’ toll, and I began to use alcohol as an energy drink. I was a 200lb man capable of getting drunk from a thimble full of beer. We closed that club, and decided that it was time to head home. I was too tired to ask about us meeting at church. It was only 3 hours before church would start. We had just enough time to go home shower, and come back. I dropped off my buddies, and headed home. In retrospect, I should have stayed at my friends’ house until morning, and been content to make it home safely. I could miss one day of Church. I’m sure that God would not mind. But missing church never entered into my mind! I had all the qualities of a disaster. I was arrogant, courageous, and crazy. I was like a tornado headed for land: you know that it’s coming, but the best you can do is to be far away when it arrives.
I dropped off the last of the friends, and headed home. My eyelids were heavy. They felt like someone had tied a brick to each of them. There was little chance that they both would remain open for the duration of the ride. I started nodding off. I would wake up just in time to miss several traffic lights. What happens next; I’m not sure. But I had to make it home. I had to get where I was going. It is at this point that my memory escapes me.
Judging by what I saw, I must have fallen asleep and hit another car. There were no rescue vehicles, so I’m assuming that they all were killed. Oh God, if you get me out of this one, I’ll praise your forever. The police officer started walking towards me. The weight of every step caused the leaves on the ground to crunch under his feet like a potato chip. I braced for bad news.
He asked me if I was okay. He found me parked on the side of the road sleeping. The other cars were there for backup. They cuffed me and searched the car just to be sure nothing was wrong. What about the accident? The officer quizzically said: what accident? I must have been dreaming.
The story above is true. The only thing left out was a scripture that went through my mind while driving. I asked the Lord to get me home safely, and I promised to praise him forever. I asked Him to get me home, and He did. The Bible invites us to not only see that God is good, but to taste (try Him) and see. It beckons us to give God a chance. My drinking days are over. My days of shutting down clubs is over. Why? Because I tasted and I saw that God is not only good; He is delicious.

The only suggestion I would make is to spell out numbers ten and under.
