I will never forget the day I walked out of the courtroom and my divorce was final. As I opened my driver’s door I instantly thought “I can be a police officer now.” It came out of nowhere but deep down I knew it was God’s call on my life. I had no doubts and until then had forgotten my childhood dreams of being a lady in blue.
I went back to work but my mind was going amuck wondering how God would make it happen. And yet knew I needed to keep trusting Him. I was terrified to tell anyone but was desperately needing someone to talk to. Later that afternoon an agent from another branch came in to talk with me. As we were talking I knew I needed to share my dream. Ironically he was a retired police officer and told me to look into attending the Police Academy.
The next day I went to the Community College and was told the academy would start in six days. If I wanted to attend I would be considered a student, pay my own expenses and be attending with police officer trainees who had already been hired. When I left I knew it was time to jump and trust God would start opening the doors only He could open.
I quit my job. My daycare worker said my daughters could temporarily live with her. I moved out of my apartment. Dad invited me to live with him so I wouldn’t have rent to pay. Before I quit my job I mentioned to a co-worker I needed a part time job at night. He asked if I ever worked as a waitress. When I told him “Yes” he called his sister and she hired me over the phone. In less than a week I was a full time student and loved it.
Shortly after the academy began the police department was hiring. I took the field agility test but failed. I wasn’t able to do a pull up and couldn’t climb over a six-foot wall. I told the woman in charge I would be back in six months. I bought my own pull-up bar and attached it to the frame of my bedroom door. Every time I walked by I did some pull-ups and chin-ups. I was getting stronger with my daily runs and academy gym class.
Six months passed and the police department was hiring again. I took the agility test and passed. I climbed over that 6’ wall like it was only two inches tall. I pulled myself up so far on that pull-up bar I thought my feet were going to touch the top. A few weeks later I took the written test but failed. A roller coaster of emotions bombarded me. Once again I told the woman in charge I would be back in six months.
The Academy graduation was just around the corner. My heart broke when I found out I didn’t pass one of my classes and wouldn’t be able to graduate. It took months of waiting before I could retake the class but when I did I passed.
A few days later a friend said the Sheriff’s Department was hiring extra-help Deputies for the Transportation Department and were interested in hiring me. I went in for me interview, completed all the testing, passed the background check and was hired for the 9-month position.
Before long the Police Department was hiring again. I passed both tests along with the background check. It was time for my final interview with the powers to be. Interestingly, the woman I had always told I would be back in six months was on my interview oral board. She smiled when she saw me and asked the final question “what are you proudest of Laine?” I smiled and replied “I finally made it here.” I shined during my interview and it was God helping me every step of the way.
It took thirty months, blood, sweat and tears but I finally became a lady in blue. During my career my strongest passion and expertise was helping abused women and children. Throughout my life I always believed God would use all the fear, pain and horrible abuse I endured for His Glory. I just didn’t know His call would be as a police officer.
