We are called to love others, but do we? How often do you go out of your way to help others? On Thanksgiving our family was coming back from dinner with our bellies and our hearts full. We saw a homeless man on the side of the road. My husband gave him a few dollars, and we drove on. After a few minutes, my mother in law pulled over. We asked what she was doing, but she just went to the back of the van where we had leftovers we were bringing home.
As she began piling a plate with food, I realized what she was doing. We drove back to the homeless man and gave him the plate. His face lit up like he had won the lottery, and he said God bless you. Something tells me he will never forget that day, and neither will I. I gained a new respect for my mother in law that day. She didn't just pay lip service to loving others, she went out of her way to show a stranger God's love.
I strive to follow her example. To go out of my way to let my light shine. We are called to love others, and sometimes the simplest things that we do out of love have a huge impact on others. I believe when we finally make it to heaven we will find we impacted others in ways we never imagined, just because we love each other. Just because we take five minutes out of our busy day to do something nice for someone else. You never know when some small act of kindness will bring someone to God, or uplift them when the need it most.
