As a child I remember hearing the song, “There will be war, said the Lord, and rumors of war.” The word war can be found in our Bible two hundred forty-nine times or more. The true Christian may face war daily; but, the advantage is, as another song says, “We are soldiers in the army of the Lord.” In the Ephesians 6:10, we are forewarned of this as Paul tells us to “Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to withstand all the wiles of the devil.” Paul then further outlines every avenue the Christian should take to avoid the devil’s wiles; and, have no doubt about it, the devil, being the devil has many.
Not all of our battles are physical; many are mental; but God, and only God, has the answers to our every need; and, only God keeps us going onward. This week’s challenge brought to my mind a young man that I know very well. The young man, a sincerely, committed and dedicated Christian, faced and still faces obstacles that, had he not been the man he has become, could have utterly destroyed him.
James, as he is known, graduated high school and college. He became a teacher and taught school in the state of Tennessee as well as in his own hometown. He went on to become a Commissioner in our city, where he also ran for mayor. Later he was chosen for a position with his home state and worked faithfully until his particular job was abolished. He returned home, and with all of his exceptional abilities, he has been unable to find a position in none of the fields in which he definitely meets qualification. I remember Jesus said in Marl 6:4, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own home.” This same statement can also apply in other areas.
My point here: James never gave up. He never looks back. Being a man of God, believing every Word God has said, with a Master’s Degree, and all the other outstanding credentials accredited to him, he shared with me the jobs he has now. I say jobs because he has more than one: he delivers newspapers, and cuts grass. Also, he has been blessed to mentor youth at a church. He shared all this with me having a broad smile on his face. All I could think of was the Apostle Paul and his statement “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
God’s Word, our instruction book, prepares us for every encounter, good or bad, that we might have to face in this life.
All of life is a growing process, and in life, we, as humans, will go through many trials, but Jesus has told in the book of John (16:33) “In this world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
Talking with my friend James, and having him share with me how he was able to deal with and smile, in spite of what he has had to endure confirms Jesus statement in the Book of Acts, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” It also brought these words to my mind:
God has the answer to all my prayers.
His Spirit leads me through all my cares.
When I fall on my knees,
And ask Him to hear.
He touches me with love;
And lets me know He is near.
He comes to me, whenever I ask,
With love abounding,
No matter the task.
He is Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
And He’s always there
When I need Him most.
