His thoughts went straight to Billy. Billy was the class bully. He intimidated the other children with his rough talk and menacing body language. Billy was always swearing, mum said that he probably learnt that language at home. Billy often used the words Jesus Christ and God as swear words. This always upset Jack, he often talked about this with his mother.
Listening to his teacher he realised how bad this was and that night he asked God to help him talk to Billy about swearing.
Monday came, Jack full of enthusiasm went to school and waited for an opportunity to talk to Billy. He did not have to wait long. At recess Billy as usual was tormenting one of the weaker children from his class. Strung among his sentences were the words Jesus Christ.
Jack asked God to help him and took a deep breath and a leap of faith. ‘Billy do you know who Jesus Christ is?’ he asked.
‘No’ said Billy.
‘He is my best friend’ replied Jack.
‘I’ve never seen you with him, what does he look like?’ Billy asked.
‘Jesus is God’s son. He was born at Christmas 2000 years ago, that is why we celebrate Christmas.’
Billy had no idea what Jack was talking about, the concept of God was foreign to him.
‘I thought Christmas was all about Santa and presents, not that I get many, my dad spends all his money at the pub.’
‘God made the world, the trees, the mountains, the sea, and everything else. He also made you and me.’
Billy was really interested now, he was hearing about God and Jesus for the first time.
‘Every time you say God and Jesus Christ as a swear word you make God sad.’ Jack was aware that God was helping him know what to say.
This was the first of many conversations that Billy and Jack had during recess and lunch time. Jack noticed that Billy didn’t swear as much and it was not long before Billy was going to Kids Church too.
Jack was glad he had asked God to help him talk to Billy. He had Stood up for for his best friend Jesus.
