At age twenty-nine Mahlstedt first took on the role of head football coach at Santa Fe High School. He developed an atmosphere of excellence that eventually led to sixteen league championships. In addition, he also took on the duties of boy’s and girl’s track coach and led these units to nineteen combined league titles. His leadership focused not only on creating successful teams on the field, but also successful men and women in later life. Mahlstedt was as concerned about the life lessons that he taught those he coached as he was in success on the playing field.
Fifty-one years of marriage has produced two sons and four grandchildren. Mahlstedt had the joy of coaching not only his two sons, but also his grandson. His commitment to a strong family life mirrors his commitment to coaching young men and women and in developing their character for the rest of their lives. The fields of Santa Fe High School will continually pay tribute to Mahlstedt’s life and the legacy that he has left for others to follow.
