“What are we waiting for?” Felix hissed a whisper.
Roger understood the frustration that his friend’s words were bathed in. They had both been through so much. Their bodies were marked all over with reminders of their trek, but the pain seemed to ebb away as the end came into view.
“Something is not right,” Roger answered as he looked into Felix’s eyes.
“You are scared my friend.”
“Of course I’m scared. You should be too.”
“My eyes are full with treasure. I don’t know fear.”
Roger paused. What did that mean for their success? Was his friend too filled with greed to be useful? Would he do something stupid at just the wrong time? Did he have any choice? He needed Felix and Felix knew it.
“You can’t do this without me.”
“I wouldn’t want to.”
Suddenly Felix jumped to his feet and charged down the side of the steep hill. Roger was taken back, but knew there was no other choice. He too jumped to his feet just as a bullet whizzed by a running Felix. Roger paused only momentarily before charging forward. Bullets began to fly in increasing quantity, but miraculously they both reached the cave mouth without being hit.
“You are insane,” Roger said panting as he lay on the ground by Felix.
Felix looked at him with a sly grin and replied, “You have to be to achieve the impossible. Isn’t that why you asked me along?”
Roget looked out at the men who were approaching. Their situation seemed grim. Each man reloaded quickly and lay on the floor of the cave. Felix took one shot and one of the men fell to the ground dead.
“Nice shot, partner,” Roger said in admiration.
“We can do this,” Felix said with exultation in his voice.
“I know we can,” Roger said as he aimed and fired successfully.
The men paused and then retreated. Roger and Felix slowly got to their feet.
“Ready to find some treasure?” Felix asked.
“You bet,” Roger replied.
The two men disappeared inside the cave. Roger knew the men would be back, but for now the hunt was on. This was truly living and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
