“Dad, it’s time!” she whispered as she took hold of his arm.
She looked into his face, and upon seeing his misty eyes, fought back her own tears.
Instead she shone with a radiant smile and tugged on his arm. He began to move slowly but steadily forward. He wasn't feeling quite as ready for this new journey to begin as she was. Her steps all but danced and he knew he could hold her back no longer.
“How is all this so possible?” she thought, as her friends sang special songs of love and she stood looking into the face of a real live souvenir God had blessed her with during her time on a recent missions trip. “How can it be that I am first among my friends to take this journey when I always thought I would be the last?” Her face ached from the constant smile she bore from feeling as if she were in a dream.
She all but danced back down the aisle toward the open doors that stood welcoming her into a new adventure. The man whose arm she now held had taken the mantle from her father, committing to protect, care and love the young lady the father loved so much.
With the excitement of the day coming to a close and the suitcases packed tightly, the young couple drove away slowly saying goodbye to their close knit circle of friends and family and welcoming a new life together, a dream come true at last for both.
In days to come, conversation often turned to the amazing ways of how God had miraculously brought them together.
“Who would have thought I would meet you on a mission field?” one would ask the other.
“And who would have thought my parents would know even before I did?” the other would exclaim.
The fire blazed in the fireplace and the same young lady sat on the worn, green sofa, holding her youngest child and surrounded by the other five. With photo albums strewn across the coffee table, and one across the lap of the oldest child, a trip down memory lane made all the chores, still needing attention, fade into the background.
“Hey, Mom, look, there’s Dad trying to ride my bike through a mud puddle!” the oldest child yelled out, while the others scooched in to get a better look.
Squealing with delight, the curly head four year old pointed to the Christmas tree pictures from years past, each with gifts laying in wait for its new owners.
The memory lane trip continued on with chuckles and squeals and stories being begged for with the turning of each page.
A short time later, with the photo albums put properly back on the shelves and the children scattered to their rooms to play, the mama breathed a deep sigh, kicked off her slippers, stretched out on the sofa and closed her eyes. “Just for a few minutes,” she thought to herself. The noise in the other rooms were playful. All seemed calm. “Who would have thought I would have this many of my own children, and that I could have so much room in my heart for them all?” She was blessed, no doubt about it.
Time has gone by. She walked hand in hand with her husband, laughing. They hadn't always been able to laugh. Often there were tears. This dream journey had been hard. Words had been hurled and hearts had been hurt. Now, though, with healed hearts and a closeness they had never known before, they looked forward to continuing on and growing old together. He came to understand her needs and she his. They talked often of all that God had done in their lives and His patience with them.
Years later~ She stood in the doorway waiting. Their six children, now all young adults, were singing the special love song that had been sung by a friend twenty five years earlier for her and her waiting husband to be. So much had happened in those years. Dressed in her sparkling, white, preserved wedding dress, amazed she could still fit it, she waited for the cue to walk toward her handsome waiting husband. A different state. A different church. A different set of friends, but still toward her very best friend of those many years. Another journey was just beginning.
