A dark gray shadow traveled across the field which lay on the East side of the house. The clouds were gathering quickly from the Southwest. A brassy yellow seemed to infiltrate the sky as the sun hid its face from earth. A sharp pain hit Polly’s stomach as she thought about the day her whole life was turning upside down. This fateful day started out with Polly needing a cup of tea.
Sitting, a little bent over, Polly’s mind wandered back to the day her children told her it was time to move. “You are much too old to stay here in your home. It‘s too dangerous. You might fall and no one’s here to pick you up.” The tea cup in Polly’s hand shook when she thought about moving from her beloved home.
Putting the cup in the saucer, Polly closed her eyes and transported her mind back to the day the family moved into this spacious home. It was everything she had dreamed about. Room for six children, with each one having their own space. Plenty of room for Dad to have his workshop, and a kitchen big enough to really do some cooking. A smile crept across Polly’s mouth as her mind pictured the new house.
Another drink of tea from the golden cup. It was seven years ago when her husband gave Polly that beautiful cup and saucer for a gift on her 77th birthday. She faithfully had her tea every morning since then. He died two years later. Now all she had of his life were the memories they shared during those golden years. Some more tea, please.
Rocking in her favorite chair, Polly’s thoughts traveled again to a time when the children were born. One by one they came into this world, each so different, but so dear. Their talents were many and their love of the Lord so great. Our quiver was surely so full. The tea was becoming cold as Polly rocked.
Then the comfortable home was opened up to children who didn’t have the love of God and family in their hearts. Those children were never taught to respect any thing. They inflicted much damage to the home. Polly thought of each one, praying that their life had seen success and fulfillment. Some had even written back letters, telling of bright spots in their travels. God has a use for all children, they just have to be ready and open. Many shared tea with Polly.
The tea was hot again. Polly poured a fresh cup, a little spilled into the saucer. Tears began to squeeze out from under her eyelids as the memories came flowing in. Packing away everything she and her husband had acquired over the years was very emotional. Things that would never be seen by Polly again. But they are just things. Time for someone else to have a cup of tea with things making their own memories. The tea was good today.
Tea time was over now. Cars were coming into the drive. Happy, laughing sounds emanating from the grandchildren, permeated the silence. It almost seemed irreverent to the quiet memories Polly had been bringing to her mind. The grandkids came running in and gave Polly some delightful hugs and kisses. “Are you ready, Grandma? Let’s go.” The cup and saucer were left on the table.
As the cars pulled away from her home of many years, tears flowed shamelessly down Polly’s cheeks. “God will take care of me and my memories,” Polly pondered. “I hope He has a teacup and saucer for me in my beautiful mansion when I arrive.” The day was over, the things gone, but the memories lingered on.

You've shown the reader the MC's anguish as she did a "life review" through internal dialogue. And, this held such a note of authenticity.
I've worked my entire career in the nursing home industry, I love the elderly, and they often do life reviews and reflect, especially upon a major move. You've brought that to life fully, front and center!
Excellent work...I loved this poignant emotional touching and realistic tale.
God bless~
Thanks and well done.
