The True Vine


I can remember as a very young child, a vine that grew along the side of our house. At first, it was something that didn’t even catch my attention, as I played with Butch, my cockerspaniel. However, over time, I noticed that the vine began to grow and grow until it covered the entire side of our house. More vines and branches were scattered everywhere, until the original true vine was lost in the midst of the green and brown colors. And, so it is sometimes with each of us. We sometimes start out in life knowing our true vine and the source of life and blessing. However, over time, we are crowded out by the cares of the world.

“Where is the true vine?”

As believers, we know that the basis of our life is in our Lord Jesus Christ. But, when we believe that it is by our own strength and efforts-physical and spiritual burnout will be results. So, as we yield our entire being to God and abide in Christ, he will bring forth fruit in our life.




“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it my bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, and ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:1-5(KJV)

Jesus said that we must have the faith of a child to inherit the kingdom of God. Children accept what they are told and are obedient because that's they trust those who care for them. As part of the "true vine", we must follow our Lord obediently because we trust Him! Great devotional:)

I like your devotional and the reminder that we can lose sight of the "True Vine" and become sidetracked into thinking we can do everything on our own.

Your story about the tangled mess of green and brown crowding the hidden "true vine" made me look at the verse you included from a new angle. Thank you. I went on to discover that, in my belief, the true vine is the source of the Holy Spirit in us and that when we sin, we allow the Spirit to drain from us. If the branch has no sap, or Spirit, it ceases to bear fruit and eventually dies off. The Husbandman, God, cares for the life of the true vine, the vine that survives through every season, by trimming off the dead branches that do not serve its purposes. What's amazing is that God and Christ allow us, the branch, to choose if we want the sap (Spirit) to flow through us or not.
