A favorite party game in the 50’s was called “Gossip”. It was fun to see how a word whispered into the ear of your nearest neighbor could circle the room and come back as a completely unrecognizable word or phrase. The original intent of the “whispered gossip” was completely lost when it went ear-to-ear. And so it is realistically.

A person can become a “gossip mill” when living with an uncontrolled tongue. The purpose of a mill is to crush a product into a powder, thus making it useful for something else. The purpose of gossip can also crush a reputation, rendering it useless. A mill is capable of producing good and useful products. But a “gossip mill” can only cause despair. Our Lord’s brother, James warned us about an unbridled tongue. “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things out not to be so.”1

Shakespeare said it well; “He who steals my purse steals trash. But he who robs me of my good name steals that which enriches him not, but makes me poor indeed.”2 The theft of a reputation is a dreadful crime. Quoting Bambi’s friend, that “great theologian“, Flower, “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
