My friends and I raced to get our snow shovels, as if we were preparing for war; we came up with a battle plan advised by the oldest who we called the General.
“Mike, you take First Street, Doug, you take Second Street, and you, Tim, take Third Street, and we will meet in the middle at Fifth Street.”
We all had a goal we were working towards, mowing grass in the summer months, shoveling snow in the winter months. Trying to reach a total of $5oo.oo by spring, to build a clubhouse that would be cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
I start on my path in which I had three driveways, and three sidewalks, to do. Doug had four sidewalks. Tim had three driveways. And the General, Wesley, had four sidewalks, and four driveways.
But this night was colder then usual, power lines was all down along the alleyways, trees and branches blocked all the places where we would normally shovel snow.
Therefore, we met up on Fifth Street, to revise our plans. In which the General said,
“Hey, my dad has a truck. We can make twice as much money and not have to work the rest of the winter.”
And I said.
“Yeah, we could use the wood for the club house. We can store it in my garage.”
Therefore, we all decided this would be a good idea, and the General went and got his dad’s truck. Moreover, we started at First Street, and made $800, that night.
However, one of the greatest things happened that night. As we was all heading home; a man who wore a rusty colored coat, and no hat, with a gray beard, covered in ice, laid on Fifth Street motionless, suffering from hypothermia, inches from death. We put him in the truck, and the General rushed him to the hospital, just in time.
That night was forever a memory, embedded in our hearts, and minds. I believe that is what shaped us to become servants, in different fields, to help those in need.
Wesley went on to become a medic in the U.S. Navy and served in Desert Storm. Doug went on to become a caregiver, to the elderly. Tim became an ambulance driver. Moreover, as for myself, my wife, Jo, and I have a ministry to help the homeless.
However, what is most amazing about that night is we did not use the money for what we planned. We gave it to Albert, the homeless man we helped, for clothes and a place to stay.
This is a life lesson about what you got, as opposed, to what you want.
