How can I go on? I cannot see tomorrow bringing me anything that is good. I can only image the same hand as has been dealt to me today. ‘Remain positive’ they say, ‘be hopeful’, ‘never give up’! If only it was that easy.
When my burdens weigh me down and I feel as frail as a house of cards. I want only to give into the pressure and collapse. My desire to continue on against the struggles that besiege me wains and I begin to bend as a blade of grass in the wind. Is this weakness on my part? Do I lack courage or endurance? Perhaps I’m just being human and recognise my qualities and frailties?
With my eyes cast down I remember the image of Christ when he fell beneath the weight of the cross and his beaten, torn body screamed out in agony. My Jesus, you fell, then accepted help and another shared your victory as you trudged the road to Calvary. Such greatness that followed surpassed all human endeavours.
From this lowly position with trembling, bent knees, I find strength in the face of Jesus as he looks back at me. I have struggled my own battles and burdens but I didn’t realise they weren’t mine to hold onto too, to carry alone. These challenges that have threatened me belonged to Jesus, he carried them all to the cross and remains with me today, sharing my load.
I have come to recognise Jesus easing the weight upon my shoulders. I am not alone and my humanness instils in me humility, it is not a question of weakness or courage, rather it is a time of wisdom and truth, represented by my cross shared with Jesus.
Tomorrow brings with it a dawning of new hope and growth. It will certainly leave history behind, for there is no other place for it to be but as something ends, something else begins. Through the gift of time comes opportunity of change and I welcome my change in heart, to be transformed into more than I was before.
