I live in Wisconsin, so I am blessed to be able to enjoy all four seasons. Admittingly, however, winter is my very least favorite season. The cold, snow, and ice has little appeal to me. It's not the most comfortable weather to be in. The same can be said for those spiritual seasons we sometimes find ourselves in. The spiritual season of winter can be very uncomfortable, as well. However, just as I know the winter is necessary, so are those cold, dreary seasons in our spiritual lives. One thing I value about winter is that I appreciate the other seasons SO much more. If it were spring all year long, I would quickly lose sight of the blessing it is. Same can be said in our spiritual lives--if it were always spring, with something fresh and new, we would quickly lose sight of the blessing and begin to take it all for granted. But more than anything, winter strips us and leaves us barren. That doesn't sound like much fun but to be more like Christ, we MUST be stripped. We must be stripped of self, sin, and whatever else keeps us from being the best we can be in Christ. We can't grow without first being pruned. And winter goes beyond pruning. It takes away everything green and new. It's sometimes a dark and lonely place to be in. But when we emerge from this spiritual winter, the brightness and light of Jesus Christ seems to radiate so much more within us. Make the most of the winter season--and look forward to the beautiful spring that awaits, once we get through it.
