Topic: Making Ends Meet (01/16/14)
On New York City streets you see them.  They push Otto Bach and Ferrari baby strollers they can never own.  Walking in Central Park, along Fifth Avenue, Madison or Lexington; on the Upper West Side or down in Soho, you will find these women from the Caribbean Islands, South America or even Africa's shores.  They chaperone, they care, they cuddle. They serve families for decades with loosely attached strings. One day they will be easily untied to move to yet another family, leaving portfolios of love behind. 

Thousands of the working poor serving thousands of the wealthy. Uneducated but nurturing, overseeing the movement and emotions of the most valuable stock of the wealthy, their children.

Nannies like merchants, trade care and compassion in exchange for minimum wage. One end of the economic spectrum intersecting with the other end and a child as the prime motivator.

Nannies, emissaries of sorts,  delegates of the poor to the wealthy extending good will upon the children of the empowered who will one day grow up with their hearts and souls molded by these hired hands and hearts. Nannies' kids will one day take the assigned positions of power for which they were groomed from preschool. They will grow up to make laws which determine the nanny's salary or improve working conditions. They may go so far as even to marry spouses that look very much like their nannies.

They will write books to expose the indignities nannies suffer and produce photo essays depicting the compassion of the poor nurturing the souls of the rich.

Extreme ends are coming together. We have to chuckle because deep down inside we always knew that God has a way of making ends meet.

This story grabbed me from the title onward. It is another example of how important the poor are to the wealthier classes. God sees that the world is supported by the working poor. They are truly blessed. Good show. Move "ends meet" into one of the first two sentences, and you have an instant hit. God has blessed us by your writing.

I loved reading this piece and the observations you make in this essay. Great opinion page piece - perhaps you should submit it to the New York Times editorial page. You never know what might transpire...

I found this a very interesting read, with many different thoughts and emotions.
Unfortunately there will always be the rich and the poor.
Many films will be made and many books written, but it is something which in my opinion will never change.

This is an interesting piece, I had a vivid picture in my mind right away. You covered the topic in a fresh almost ironic way. The only thing I'd suggest would have been to tell a personal story about a nanny who has her heart broken when it's time to leave. I did enjoy this and you have an intriguing voice. You may want to check out Jan's Writing Basics on the message boards. She gives great tips for writers of all levels. Keep writing.
