(B.Q. walks out carrying a briefcase)
“Hi, thanks so much for inviting me. Quite honestly, I was really shocked to get the invitation to talk to you girls about beauty. You know so many “religious” people don’t place appearance at the top of their list. Unfortunately, as I was trying to bring in my make-up kit the principal accosted, I mean approached me and told me of your school’s “zero tolerance” policy on cosmetics. Well, anyway, all is not lost. I was able to get past security with my manual (B.Q. pulls out a well worn paperback) “Girlfriend’s Guide to Become a Beauty Queen” and a Beauty Queen’s best friend…Vaseline.” (B.Q. shows class her quart container.)
“With this amazing substance I can remove my makeup without a trace, gloss my lips, and keep my teeth moist when I have to smile for hours on end.”
(B.Q. stops as she sees a student raise her hand.)
“Good, a question already. You, in the blue jumper. Oh I guess all of you are wearing blue jumpers. The one with the braces. I know what you’re thinking, “How will I ever get the Vaseline out of my braces.” Not to worry. You can’t enter competitions until the braces come off, so just keep on brushing and before you know it…”
(B.Q. stops again as the same girl raises her hand)
“What? That wasn’t your question? Oh, don’t worry about the training bra….I wore one at your age too, and well, obviously I don’t need one any more. (throws back shoulders) You didn’t have a question? (sighs) Then what is it you want to say.”
“You didn’t invite me here to tell you about beauty, you invited me here so you could tell me about beauty. Impossible, I have the invitation right here (looks in briefcase and pulls out letter) “Dear Miss Springfield, you are cordially invited for a lesson in beauty at Daughters of the King Christian Girls Academy”.”
(pause)
“But you’re giving the lesson in beauty? How quaint. What exactly would you like to teach me.”
(pause)
“Inner beauty? But I know all about that. It’s covered in my manual. Chapter 7, Beautiful Bowels and Other Keys to Great Skin”. See, brought my water bottle…I never leave home without it. And for a snack….whole wheat prune muffins.”
(pause)
“That’s not quite what you’re talking about either. What’s that? You have a book of your own to help you with beauty? Oh, by all means, do show me, I mean, after all I did clear my schedule to be here today. So, what is this book?”
(chuckling) “You use the Bible as a beauty guide? How quaint. And, what exactly does the Bible have to say about inner beauty?”
(B.Q. receives a Bible)
“You want me to look at Ephesians 4:23-24, (flips though the Bible) Oh, here it is;
“Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.”*
“I’m sorry, but what do righteousness, holiness and truth have to do with being beautiful? I mean….wait, isn’t, “cleanliness next to godliness?” I think that’s covered in (flipping through manual again) Chapter 16, (face brightens) Cleanliness Is Next to Godliness! Whew, finally we’re on the same page.”
“Oh, we’re not. I’m in the wrong book again. (pause) I have to find something else in the Bible? I was told there’d be some tough audiences as Miss Springfield, but this is really over the top. Oh, all right, Romans 12:2.
“And do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”*
Transformed. I like that. Kind of like a butterfly. My mom always told me I would be like a butterfly…. shedding my caterpillar braces and training bra, and transformed into a beautiful Monarch. And just look at me now!”
“You think it needs to happen to my mind as well? (pause) Well, yes, I do have to admit sometimes my thoughts aren’t as lovely as I am. Sometimes…..”
(B.Q. sits thoughtfully for a momen, then perks up)
“Well, look at the time! This has been a truly quaint afternoon, and I do hope you all learned as much as I did! And, don’t forget your Vaseline!”
