He was skilled in carpentry and enjoyed making many things with his hands. One day my mother showed him a photograph of a lamp with a well and pump. "I suppose you want to buy it?" said my father. "Yes, I think it would look great in the living room." "We'll see," replied dad.
It wasn't long until my father took out a block of cedar and began to carve. He drilled a hole from the top to the bottom of the block. He attached a base. With a small piece of cedar, he carved out a well and glued it to the base. Soon his large hands were whittling away at a drink cup.
He whittled and carved and whittled some more. First, the cup handle was too long, then the cup was too large. Chips flew from his knife until the cup looked just right. He made a small peg and glue it to the block. He hung the cup on the peg.
He threaded an electrical cord through the hole in the block and attached a lamp socket. He screwed in a light bulb, and placed the cream-colored shade atop.
He sundered into the kitchen with a big smile on his face. "Hey, June, guess what's behind my back!" "You brought me some flowers from the garden," quipped my mother. He thrust out his big hands with the lamp. "Wow!. It's just like the one in the magazine!" I can't believe you made this for me." My mother dashed into the living room and plugged it in. The warmth from its glow and the pride on my father's face filled the room.
"Honey, this is better than the one in the magazine because you made it for me." My father's tinkering had turned him into an expert lamp maker in my mother's eyes.
