How long can a lifetime love song last
(if one can last that long)?
How long can a boxed-up love go on?

Pulling out old snapshots --
we review how love has grown,
while we fiddled with its sound
between our more diurnal works.

Creating an opus behind the scenes
with the lyrics we’ve co-written, love,
our spirits bit by bit started to sing,
merely the melody tickling our lips.

Hum (how long?)
Hum hum (can it last?)
At the start we heard a modest tune.
Today, songs of intimacy bond our souls.

Let’s stretch our lungs, breathing each other in.
Take all our songs out of their boxes,
And sing ourselves hoarse.
The kids are gone. The neighbors will think we’re wild.

Let the walls resonate with all we’ve got so far.
From whispered promise to celebratory aria -
have we got time to sing our work full length?
My love, just how long can a lifetime love song last?
