Warm in an insular house
chaired in a spring-padded seat
switch in my lazy hand
glass brimming chocolate heat
I watch the network news.
Candidate digging for dirt
Opponent stabbing some backs
Bank lends its ill-gotten gain
Millionaires minimise tax
Injustice rears its head.
Act justly
Safe in my middle-class home
replete from my adequate meals
my feet in slippers of fur
a cushion under my heels
I sip my comfort drink.
Foreign aid budget sized down
Redundancy causes great pain
Drought drives a million from homes
Health reform founders again
Inequity strikes again.
Love mercy
Here in my castle of bricks
safe from the outside harm
cocooned from the turbulent world
secure in suburban calm
I nibble roasted nuts.
Philanthropist honoured by queen
Millionaire gives fifty grand
Senator filmed in a slum
giving some food out by hand
I flick the switch to off.
Walk humbly with your God
Soft in my comfort zone
sheltered and sated, I pray
'Lord in this difficult world
show me your chosen way.'
His word to me is clear:
'He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.'
(Micah 6:8, NIV)
