Have we killed THE DREAM -
Or, is it still alive?
Can all Americans
Who hold these truths,
Stand and say,
“At last, we have arrived?”
Can we say -
There’s no more racial prejudices,
Or, injustices to the poor?
Can we say -
All persons have equal rights,
That schools and universities
Are now all free
From disturbances and fights?
Can a person now live
Anywhere he or she wants;
Or, go to the schools of their choice?
And, if there’s wrong in the country -
Can we speak loud -
Let the world hear our voice?
Do we teach our children
To love one another
Even as Jesus loves us?
Do we impress upon them -
All men are equal -
Formed by God
From the earth’s own dust?
Have we learned from THE DREAM
That our freedom depends
On the love and peace
In our hearts -
Our personal pride,
Our relentless strive,
Our very own efforts
To receive and impart?
Have we killed THE DREAM?
No, Martin’s DREAM is very much alive
And bursting with promise and hope!
All over the land people are
Joining in
Filled with the revolutionary sing
“LET FREEDOM RING - LET FREEDOM RING!
