He stumbled along laboring under a heavy burden. He carried so many heavy bags he could barely walk a straight line. He focused so intently on them he didn’t realize someone walked beside him.
“Oh, hello,” he said as two bags cluttered to the ground. Stalling his walk, he stooped to collect them again only to drop two others.
“Wow, you have a lot of bags there,” the other man noticed, “It would be easier on you if you just dropped them and let them go.”
The first man stood erect.
“What? Oh no, I couldn’t do that. I’ve been carrying some of these for a long time. Like this one. I’ve had it since High School when some classmates mocked me. And this one? I’ve carried it for 10 years when my one-time best friend didn’t help me move. And this one here, this was last week when my wife made me miss that ball game that turned into an instant classic. Did you see it?”
“No, I missed it,” the second chuckled, “Listen, don’t you realize that if you let go of some of that baggage, your walk will get much easier? If you forgive those things and move along, you won’t have so much holding you back. Can’t I take some of those for you?”
The first man’s brow furrowed as he considered the words. Could it be that easy? Could he just let it go?
Relaxing his whole body, he let everything drop to the floor where it landed with a crash, forming a mountain behind him as it tumbled to the ground. A sudden freedom washed over him like an airy breeze. He breathed in the freshness as he realized for the first time how heavy that load had been and how healthy he felt to have it gone.
He took a step forward, straight and steady. He stepped forward again, laughing at the effortless progress. Every step away from the pile got even simpler as he went.
“Wow,” he remarked, releasing a chuckle, “You were right. This will be much easier. Why didn’t I notice it before? It could have made a huge difference for me even earlier. My walk is going to be far easier without carrying any excess baggage.”
