It was a beautiful day, but we were all cautiously watching the weather since this was a lengthy trip and that time of year where we were all well aware that in an instant a thunderstorm could pop up anywhere and cause us to have a miserable wet ride. However, the different weather stations that we were monitoring were all showing that there was only a slight possibility of a pop-up shower when got back home later on that day.
We gathered around for a group prayer then revved up our motors and took off on our journey. The ride to Wheeling was fairly uneventful and the feel of the open air blowing against my face was an experience I will never forget, as this was the first time that I had decided to ride without my helmet. When we got to Wheeling we stopped for lunch at the infamous DiCarlos Pizza and then headed to a lodge on a hilltop with a beautiful view of the valley. Suddenly we noticed out of nowhere that there were thunderstorms building up all around us and realized that they were going to be turning into some pretty strong storms and decided to cut our trip short and head back home.
Just inside the Ohio border as we pulled into a gas station to fill up for the ride home and take our helmets back off. Suddenly the skies opened up and we were stranded for a couple of hours. Once it looked like things were clearing up we broke up into two groups; one was staying behind to eat dinner and the other, which my daughter and I were part of, decided to head home during the break in the rain. In that instant I decided to wear my helmet and there is no doubt that this decision saved my life.
There was another sudden cloud burst a few miles into our ride, but after that one moved on it finally looked like smooth sailing, until we got into Zanesville, Ohio. I don’t know if it was the wet, newly paved road, the pull of the semi’s on my left or just a wrong move on my part, but in an instant my motorcycle slipped out from under me and I remember darkness coming over me as I hit the pavement, and then the next moment I was sliding on the back of my helmet and heard a voice whispering in my ear “keep your head up like this”. Following that command kept my body up in the air and off the pavement while I continued to slide over six hundred feet. When my body finally came to a stop I could feel the pain in my right hip and hear the voice of my daughter screaming for me.
In an instant God shielded my body with his mighty hand and put it in a position that kept it from enduring the long slide along the pavement that would have torn it up for sure and even gave me instructions on how to ride it out.
In an instant, it was God who provided an RN, who was riding with us, a trauma doctor, who was in the next lane over and an ambulance that was two cars in front of us to be at my disposal to look after me and be able to transport me to the trauma center that was located at the next exit. It was determined that I had a fractured right femur and a scratch on my elbow. I was then transported back to Columbus for surgery.
I am almost completely healed now and if I ever had any doubts about God’s love and mercy for me, it was in that instant that all my doubts disappeared. It was in that instant that my daughter realized that going to church on Sundays was more important than working and she is serving in other ministries now. It is because of that instant that I will always remember to obediently listen when God talks to me.
