When my husband and I started driving a truck over the road many years ago, we were driving a truck that had no sleeper so we had to stay in many motels for the first year.
Even though that was so long ago, there were two motels that still to this day stand out in my mind.
The first one was in the great state of Missouri the "Show
Me State". It was late into the night and we were totally exausted. We thought at that time it would be cheaper for us to stay in the "mom and pop" motels since they would probably be less expensive than the name brand motels. We checked into the motel and when we walked into the room, we knew we were in trouble. The floor slanted downhill. We thought it would be alright since it was just for the one night but we were soon to realize that the nightmare was just beginning. We took showers and the water ran to the back of the tub causing it not to drain. When we got in bed, we decided to turn the TV on and I looked for the remote since it was not laying out anywhere. So I tried to pull the drawer open in the nightstand and found the drawer was nailed shut. The air
conditioner was blowing hot air. My husband walked to the office to see if there were other rooms and we were informed that this was the only room available. Since we were so tired we decided to stay and tough it out. Once in bed, we found it too slanted downhill so we were hanging on all night just to keep from rolling out. We had noticed when checking in that there was a sign which read "Free breakfast in the mornings". So after a very restless sleep, I went over to ask what time the breakfast started and was informed by the clerk that they had not served breakfast in a very long time. I did proceed to tell them that they should take the sign down. Over the next few months we would think about that motel and laugh because no one would have believed us if we had told them about our stay in the "Show Me State"....
The other motel that will always stand out in my mind was in the great state of Pennsylvania (which I now reside in).
We once again found this "mom and pop" motel and checked in. Again it was in the middle of the night. When we walked in and turned the light on, I was shocked! There were mirrors on all the walls and also the ceiling. I had always heard about rooms like this but had never actually stayed in one. When you looked around you actually saw many beds and tables in the mirrors. It was like a 3 D movie. There was even a water bed to boot. I was almost nauseous by the time we went to bed and turned the light out. Again over the next few months, we would laugh about that night.
From then on we started staying at a more name brand motel that was nationwide. We stayed at so many of these that we actually got a phone call from the owner of the chain. I really don't want to mention which chain but I can give you a hint. The commercial always said "And we"ll leave the light on".......
