Topic: The Reader (04/15/10)
Knewbie’s First Day

“Hey guys look who’s here, it’s Knewbie; he’s hot off the presses, right out of the shoot. Wow he’s a brand new baby! It’s been a while since we’ve had one of those join us.” spouted Captain.

“Hi, I’m Annie and I’m looking for my dog did you happen to see him, he’s big and light brown, his name is Sandy?”

“I don’t think so, what’s a dog anyway?” replied Knewbie.

“Hi Knewbie, I’m War’n and I am very glad to meet you and I hope you find this to be a place filled with peace. You will find there are many vacations from here and if people like you your stays here will be short. But you will find great adventure when you’re away. It’s good to have you here Knewbie.” proclaimed War’n.

“Greetings Knewbie, I’m Romeo and I can clue you in on all the hot ones around here if you know what I mean but Juliette is off limits, she’s mine. H over there, he’s the most popular one here! Man what I wouldn’t do to have his popularity, but he’s such a cool guy you can’t help but respect him. I gotta run now, see ya later.” and Romeo was gone.

As Knewbie sits quietly Captain starts acting a bit strange and Knewbie is rather concerned.

“Hi, H, I’m Knewbie, I know we haven’t met yet but I’m getting concerned about this guy Captain on the other side of me, he’s stripping down to his underpants and grabbing a near by drape, do I need to be worried?”

H replied in his quiet wise manner “Captain is just getting ready for a little vacation, he’s rather popular mostly with kids, he will take many vacations from this place, he’s loved by many people. He has a way of making them laugh and laugh often; he even gets his share of ooos and yucks. But the same people keep coming back for him.”

Knewbie was curious, how could laughter make people keep coming back for Captain, he just had to ask. “Mr. H, what makes one popular here, I see some that look brand new accept for all the dust on them; then there is you, I hear you are the most popular one here. What makes one popular in a place like this?”

H knew the answer, there were many reasons. “Well Knewbie, there are different things that make you popular. It comes down to your personality I guess. Some people like to laugh; Captain does a good job of that for some but not for all. Some like a good scare. Some like to just hear the ups and downs others go through. Some like to be encouraged and up lifted. Others like to be up on the Political battles of the day. There are also those who just want to know the truth, they’re my favorite audience. Then there are those who just love to learn.”

Knewbie just had to know what he was. “Mr. H, how do I know what my personality is, how do I know which people will like me, or if I’ll be popular?”

Well Knewbie, when that first person picks you up when they flip through your pages and caress you, you’ll start to feel it. If they laugh hard or shed a tear, you will feel it. If they underline some of your words or highlight them, you will know they love you. If they keep picking you up just to open you for a few minutes you’ll know they love you and you’ll be popular.”

“Mr. H, will I ever be as popular as you?” asked Knewbie.

“Well Knewbie, my real name is Holy Bible, and I have been the best seller as long as books have been printed, so no, I do not think you will ever be as popular as I am. It’s ok, you will have your own popularity just for who you are.

“Wow, I never though I would meet a Holy Bible! I heard about you when I was with my running mates at the publishers. Thank you Mr. H, for answering my questions… OOooooo. What’s happening?” Squeaked Knewbie as he was being lifted into the air.

“You’re being checked out! Enjoy your trip Knewbie, that’s what we’re her for little one.” H knew Knewbie would enjoy his life at the library very much.

Clever! Did we go to high school together? I wrote an editorial from the books' point of view but they weren't as cleverly named. Good job and I enjoyed it even though I thought H was Hemingway.

This was a unique approach to your topic. I used to wonder when I was in High School how to be popular and wished someone would tell me. Thanks for a cute way to introduce your subject.

This is excellent, at first I thought it was a comic strip, but I love the book idea even more. You had a couple of tiny typos- nearby is one word and you used her instead of here, but those can be fixed easily. If you have someone you can read your story aloud to you before you submit, you'll find that to be quite helpful.

It was a fresh take on the topic and an out of the box POV. great job!
